SolarWinds Service Desk: pricing and contract negotiation
SolarWinds Service Desk sells on per-agent tiers and a bundled discovery and asset story. The overspend hides in the tier you were steered into and the agent seats nobody trimmed. We negotiate the contract from the buyer's side and ground the target in benchmark data.
SolarWinds Service Desk (formerly Samanage) is a mid-market cloud ITSM tool priced per agent across a small set of plans. Its pitch is the bundle: incident, problem and change alongside discovery and asset management in one subscription. That bundle is genuinely useful, and it is also where buyers quietly pay for capability they never switch on.
Unlike ServiceNow, SolarWinds deals rarely get a formal procurement review at renewal. The numbers are small enough to approve and large enough to matter. A benchmarked renewal on a few dozen agents routinely returns more, in percentage terms, than the headline enterprise deals.
How SolarWinds Service Desk prices
- Per-agent plans. Tiers (commonly Team, Business and Professional) gate features like change management, the CMDB and advanced automation. Most overspend starts with a plan chosen for one feature.
- Agent versus requester. Requesters are unlimited; only agents are licensed. The number of true agents is almost always smaller than the contracted count.
- Discovery and asset bundle. Asset and discovery capability is part of the value story but is frequently underused relative to what is paid.
Where SolarWinds buyers overpay
| Overspend source | The fix |
|---|---|
| Idle agent seats | Reconcile active agents, true down the count at renewal. |
| Tier carried for one feature | Test whether a lower plan plus a targeted add-on is cheaper. |
| Underused asset module | Measure adoption; renegotiate or drop what is not used. |
| Quiet annual uplift | Benchmark and open the renewal early rather than accept the increase. |
The levers we pull
We Map the agent and requester split and the modules in real use, Benchmark the per-agent price against comparable mid-market deals, build Leverage with timing and a credible alternative such as Freshservice or TOPdesk, and Close with a capped multi-year price and a true-down right so the next renewal cannot snap back to list.
Benchmark the SolarWinds deal before you renew.
Per-agent pricing and a feature-driven tier hide easy savings. We right-size the agents and ground the target in real comparables.
